Want to create an awesome Valentine masterpiece? Check out this super-easy and fun project! I’ve been doing this project with my students for at least the past 10 years, and it’s always a crowd pleaser!
- camera or phone that takes pics
- paint of your choice
- heart-shaped hole punch (or scissors)
- scrap paper
- Mod Podge
First, take a profile/side picture of your child pretending to blow a kiss. Angle his/her head up a bit, so it looks like he/she is blowing a kiss upward. Then if you have photo paper, you can print the pic yourself. Or you can do what we did, and upload the pics to CVS.com, and have them printed in an hour. You can print them in color, be we preferred black and white for this project.
Then, sponge paint the canvas with just one or two similar colors to create a pretty, plain background. We used turquoise, red, pink, grey and purple paints. Sponge paint white with white paint as a top layer to create a nice texture.
Don’t they look purdy?
Next, cut around your child’s profile pic.
Glue the photo to one of the bottom corners of the canvas.
Then you can either cut out small hearts with scissors or use a heart-shaped hole punch, which is muuuch easier. You can use whatever paper you’d like, but it’s a great way to use up old scrap paper, unwanted art projects or even wallpaper scraps. (Many wallpaper stores will hand over their old sample books instead of throwing them away…it’s worth a call to ask.)
Brush a thin layer of Mod Podge where you want the hearts to be “blown” upward on the canvas. Then just place the cut-out hearts in the Mod Podge in whatever design you’d like.
And that’s it! Unless you glue a ribbon on the back of the canvas to hang it.
How stinkin’ cute did these turn out?!??!
